Project Loom: Understand the new Java concurrency model

For one, it would require more work in the JVM, which makes heavy use of the Thread class, and would need to be aware of a possible fiber implementation. It also creates some circularity when writing schedulers, that need to implement threads by assigning them to threads . This means that we would need to expose the fiber’s continuation for use by the scheduler. Unlike the kernel scheduler that must be very general, virtual thread schedulers can be tailored for the task at hand. Project Loom intends to eliminate the frustrating tradeoff between efficiently running concurrent programs and efficiently writing, maintaining and observing them. It leans into the strengths of the platform rather than fight them, and also into the strengths of the efficient components of asynchronous programming.

A separate Fiber class might allow us more flexibility to deviate from Thread, but would also present some challenges. If the scheduler is written in Java — as we want — every fiber even has an underlying Thread instance. If fibers are represented by the Fiber class, the underlying Thread instance would be accessible to code running in a fiber (e.g. with Thread.currentThread or Thread.sleep), which seems inadvisable. It is the goal of this project to add a lightweight thread construct — fibers — to the Java platform. What user-facing form this construct may take will be discussed below. The goal is to allow most Java code to run inside fibers unmodified, or with minimal modifications.

The virtual threads play an important role in serving concurrent requests from users and other applications. Why go to this trouble, instead of just adopting something like ReactiveX at the language level? The answer is both to make it easier for developers to understand, and to make it easier to move the universe of existing code.

Project Loom allows the use of pluggable schedulers with fiber class. In asynchronous mode, ForkJoinPool is used as the default scheduler. It works on the work-stealing algorithm so that every thread maintains a Double Ended Queue of tasks.

Project Loom: Lightweight Java threads

It is the goal of this project to experiment with various schedulers for fibers, but it is not the intention of this project to conduct any serious research in scheduler design, largely because we think that ForkJoinPool can serve as a very good fiber scheduler. Virtual Threads are actually well managed, and don’t crash the virtual machine by using too much resources, and so the ALTMRetinex filter processing finished. The current implementation of light threads available in the OpenJDK build of the JDK is not entirely complete yet, but you can already have a good taste of how things will be shaping up. The cost of creating a new thread is so high that to reuse them we happily pay the price of leaking thread-locals and a complex cancellation protocol.

Both the task-switching cost of virtual threads as well as their memory footprint will improve with time, before and after the first release. Virtual threads, as the primary part of the Project loom, are currently targeted to be included in JDK 19 as a preview feature. If it gets the expected response, the preview status of the virtual threads will then be removed by the time of the release of JDK21.

Java used to have green threads, at least in Solaris, but modern versions of Java use what’s called native threads. Native threads are nice but relatively heavy, and you might need to tune the OS if you want to have tens of thousands of them. “Apps might see a big performance boost without having to change the way their code is written,” he said. “That’s very appreciated by our customers who are building software for not just a year or two, but for five to 10 years — not having to rewrite their apps all the time is important to them.” Virtual threads under Project Loom also require minimal changes to code, which will encourage its adoption in existing Java libraries, Hellberg said. As we want fibers to be serializable, continuations should be serializable as well.

Not only does it imply a one-to-one relationship between app threads and operating system threads, but there is no mechanism for organizing threads for optimal arrangement. For instance, threads that are closely related may wind up sharing different processes, when they could benefit from sharing the heap on the same process. Let’s look at some examples that show the power of virtual threads. Compare the below with Golang’s goroutines or Kotlin’s coroutines. For some reason, threads seem to be slightly faster at sending asynchronous messages, at around 8.5M per second, while fibers peak at around 7.5M per second.

Observability as a common language for both developers and operations teams still has plenty of room for improvement in the era … “When I looked at what one of the first slides was at the keynote, the thing that stuck out to me was ‘conservative and innovative,'” Cornwall said. “Conservative was first — they are not looking to upset any java project loom of the existing Java programmers with features that are going to break a lot of what they do. But they are looking to do some innovation.” Java 20 contained five more major JDK enhancement proposal updates under Projects Loom, Amber and Panama, and a few other Project Amber features were discussed as future roadmap items for Java 21.

Still, a different mindset was required for using asynchronous I/O as hiding the complexity cannot be a permanent solution and would also restrict users from any modifications. Before proceeding, it is very important to understand the difference between parallelism and concurrency. Concurrency is the process of scheduling multiple largely independent tasks on a smaller or limited number of resources. Whereas parallelism is the process of performing a task faster by using more resources such as multiple processing units.

Virtual threads

LOOM will allow better scaling for multi-threaded app servers with blocking I/O and simplify coding. Unfortunately some examples of using LOOM virtual threads suggest dramatic performance improvements – that is until you spot that the benchmarks use Thread.sleep() in the Runnable task so are not real-world cases. Still, while code changes to use virtual threads are minimal, Garcia-Ribeyro said, there are a few that some developers may have to make — especially to older applications. “Before Loom, we had two options, neither of which was really good,” said Aurelio Garcia-Ribeyro, senior director of project management at Oracle, in a presentation at the Oracle DevLive conference this week. Virtual threads represent a lighter-weight approach to multi-threaded applications than the traditional Java model, which uses one thread of execution per application request. This was the most efficient approach when application performance was typically limited by the capacity of server CPUs, but as CPUs have become more powerful, applications are limited by I/O, according to the number of operating system threads available.

  • Without it, multi-threaded applications are more error-prone when subtasks are shut down or canceled in the wrong order, and harder to understand, he said.
  • What we need is a sweet spot as mentioned in the diagram above , where we get web scale with minimal complexity in the application.
  • Before Loom, this distinction was not made – there was only one type of threads – and the blocking I/O was not a feasible option for high throughput applications, like web servers.
  • In some cases, you must also ensure thread synchronization when executing a parallel task distributed over multiple threads.

To cut a long story short, your file access call inside the virtual thread, will actually be delegated to a (….drum roll….) good-old operating system thread, to give you the illusion of non-blocking file access. First let’s write a simple program, an echo server, which accepts a connection and allocates a new thread to every new connection. Let’s assume this thread is calling an external service, which sends the response after few seconds. What we need is a sweet spot as mentioned in the diagram above , where we get web scale with minimal complexity in the application. But first, let’s see how the current one task per thread model works. In Java, each thread is mapped to an operating system thread by the JVM .

b. Internal user-mode continuation

Almost every blog post on the first page of Google surrounding JDK 19 copied the following text, describing virtual threads, verbatim. By default, the Fiber uses the ForkJoinPool scheduler, and, although the graphs are shown at a different scale, you can see that the number of JVM threads is much lower here compared to the one thread per task model. This resulted in hitting the https://www.globalcloudteam.com/ green spot that we aimed for in the graph shown earlier. The scheduler allocates the thread to a CPU core to get it executed. In the modern software world, the operating system fulfills this role of scheduling tasks to the CPU. Java makes it so easy to create new threads, and almost all the time the program ends-up creating more threads than the CPU can schedule in parallel.
